Discuss a News Event

Open class discussion at the beginning of class by discussing a recent news event, such as the royal wedding or a more serious occurrence, like a recent election. Spend about five minutes discussing it as a class, asking for opinions and taking questions. If students respond well to the activity, they may be asked to bring in news clippings of recent events that interest them for discussion at the beginning of class on a regular basis.

This activity warms students up to speaking and thinking in English and also gives valuable experience in offering and listening to opinions on current events.
