Natural Disaster Worksheet: Pets in Disaster
This worksheet, called 'Natural Disaster Worksheet: Pets in Disaster', was originally provided by Australian Red Cross organization. The page can be printed out and given to each student as encouragement for them to contemplate about their pet or a friend's pet and the plan of action for it in case of a disaster. Open the discussion session by offering students to share their thoughts on the following:
Where is a safe place for the pet to sleep and rest?
What food and water will the pet need? How much will they need?
What other things might the pet need? (e.g. bowl, toy, litter, leash)
Who might help you take care of the pet? What is their telephone number and address?
In combination with other natural disaster awareness and preparedness reading exercises, this worksheet can be a great addition to the lesson, reminding children that while staying safe during an emergency is their priority, they should not forget about their pets who can also suffer from an unexpected disaster.
