When teaching past necessity, I have found this critical path very helpful. It helps students differenciate between necessary and unnecessary actions in the past and how to express whether they were performed or not. It also includes a reminder of a typical mistake so our students are aware of it. It is a single page designed to present or revise the structures in a clear, graphical way.
