I don't like first lessons in student's books because they seem to me either too difficult for beginners or too easy. That's why I tried (and successfully!) my own version. After several minutes of talk (it's usually about learning goals etc.) I claim that my student can understand and speak English right away. And immediately I greet him and address my first questuion in English. And then we repeat the same dialogue with notes. The dialogues are designed in the way that a student can easily repeat all the phrases. In order to make the learning funnier I use rather stupid pics of people (I'm really bad at drawing) and we role-play for additional reps.
